Dear Visitors,
Welcome to the website of The York Union, the debating society at the University of York! We act as a non-partisan forum for free discussion and debate on any, and every, matter. We do not shy away from the controversial, quite the opposite. We believe in hearing and debating all views- the passive, the aggressive, the moderate, the extreme and the confused are all welcome through our doors. We want to develop our understanding of the world around us and the people in it. From international affairs to questions of morality (and of course the occasional debate on cheese), we offer both complex and comical discussion.

As one of the most active societies on campus, we have a wide range of activities on offer to our members from weekly debates and debating training classes, competing in national Inter-Varsity competitions almost every weekend, hosting high-profile speakers to address the Union, running our own annual Inter-Varsity competition and Schools Competition and going on trips, we have a packed termcard for our members.

And then there are the socials! Any excuse seems to be the policy here, with movie nights, trips to comedy shows/plays, three-legged bar crawls, giant picnics in the summer and the annual ball after the York IV.

I hope you enjoy browsing the website,

Morven Hamilton
President, 2008-2009

    • We've added lots of new events to the Term Card page, so why not take a look at what we've got planned this term
    • We've also updated the class times in the 'News' Section. We're reminding you twice so no one can complain they didn't know we'd changed the times. So both classes are now at 18:30 in L/N/002 and are followed by the weekly debate at 20:00
    • And don't forget to meet everyone at Derwent bar after the debate!
    • Plus we've updated the Debating Record
    • And last but not least, we've added some IV tabs to the Inter-Varsity Results
